Where Caregiving Meets Academic Success

MIA is the support network and technical infrastructure needed to ensure caring responsibilities are treated as part of real academic life, not an exception to it.

Our Community Today

We have grown from a grassroots movement into a thriving community connected through our dedicated newsletter and monthly events. To support this growth, we are launching the MiA App—a dedicated "Academic Village" that centralises peer support, specialised tools, and resource libraries in one secure space.

While we test and refine the MIA App, our "Academic Village" is already thriving as a private WhatsApp community. By joining us today, you gain immediate access to:

  • Monthly Newsletter: Insights, resources, interviews and updates delivered directly to your inbox.

  • Online Events & Meet-ups: Virtual spaces to connect with other student parents and carers, listen to and ask questions to our selected guest speakers.

  • The Community Fund: Practical financial support for those navigating the demands of academic life.

  • WhatsApp Network: Real-time peer support and connections with over 50 active members.

  • MIA is an Operating System for Academic Retention. We are a data-informed infrastructure that helps universities better understand, support, and sustain their academic communities. By combining institutional insight with human expertise, MIA enables earlier, fairer, and more transparent support for students and staff, strengthening scholarly success, academic well-being, institutional resilience, and long-term educational value. We’re named after Mothers, but built for every parent and carer navigating the demands of academic life.

  • MIA bridges the gap between complex caring responsibilities and institutional requirements, ensuring that students and staff with caregiving roles are not excluded by systems that historically were never designed for them. We provide tools that integrate family life with academic ambition, recognising caregiving not as a barrier, but as a source of resilience, skill, and leadership. Our "Three-Tier Product Ecosystem" includes:

    • Core User Platform: Featuring AI-optimised scheduling and anonymous peer support tools like "Secret Chat".

    • MIA Pro (Institutions): Real-time retention dashboards and risk-prevention tools for universities.

    • Corporate Services: Matching resilient talent with flex-first corporate roles.

  • MIA is currently an early-stage functional prototype, shaped in collaboration with a growing community of students, academics, and professionals with lived experience of caregiving in higher education. We work with:

    • Academic Communities: Over 50 members already utilise our newsletter, events, and community fund.

    • Institutional Partners: We are gathering insights to demonstrate that precision support tools are not optional add-ons, but essential academic infrastructure.

    • Corporate Allies: Validating talent profiles to connect caregivers with professional opportunities.

MIA is currently an early-stage functional prototype, shaped in collaboration with a growing community of students, academics, and professionals with lived experience of caregiving in higher education.

We are gathering insights to demonstrate that precision support tools are not optional add-ons, but essential academic infrastructure.

This functional prototype is designed to test how such an infrastructure could work, and why it matters. Your honest feedback will directly shape the professional version currently in development. © 2025 MIA (Motherhood In Academia)Original concept, UI design, and music by Jasmijn Toffano
